THE recent vessel fire at the marina proved to be a good test of the systems, procedures and training for the Empire Marina staff in coordinated response to fire and first aid emergencies.
On Thursday 14 January this year a 30ft fly-bridge cruiser caught fire following engine start up. The skipper suffered extensive burns and jumped into the water alongside his boat.
Marina staff wear commercial grade radios as part of the uniform so, when the fire call went out, all hands were in position to respond in a coordinated manner, and without delay.
The fire was quickly extinguished and the injured man Mr. Parsons, was supported in the water and given oxygen by the marina staff while awaiting paramedic attention.
Emergency Services arrived quickly on the scene and as soon as patient was stabilised, he was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital burns unit.
Stephen Smith, the director of the Marina, commended his staff on their quick response and professionalism during the emergency.
As part of the coordinated response, Empire Marinas sent an immediate SMS alert and email follow-up to marina berth and mooring customers keeping everyone abreast of the situation at the marina.
On his release from hospital, Mr. Parsons visited the marina with his parents, thanked staff for their assistance during the emergency and for looking after his vessel afterwards. Although he faces eighteen months of treatment for his burns, Mr. Parsons expects to make a full recovery.

Empire Marinas Emergency Response Equipment is state of the art which, addition to a strategically placed hose reels and fire extinguishers, includes the following equipment:
Commercial grade digital radios
Portable fire cart that can deliver foam and water (foam is essential for fibre glass fires)
Grappling hook and wire cable for securing burning vessels
Automatic Electronic Defibrillator (AED)
Three Station Alarm fire fighters facility with EWIS Paging system for marina wide announcements
This significant investment in equipment and training certainly paid for itself in the recent emergency.
GALLEY FOODS early evening dinner service on Friday and Saturday nights has proved very popular over the summer.
The marina takes on a very different complexion at night and the warm summer evenings are perfect for some delicious seafood and wine by the water. Galley has has introduced some delectable choices to tempt the pallet including mouth watering marinated squid salad to start and gloriously tender pan roasted beef fillet for main course.
Nick has also developed an excellent wines list and we can certainly recommend the Jim Barry Lodge Hill Shiraz with the fillet.
What better way to start the weekend then dinner at the marina, a night on the boat, a sumptuous breakfast then out for day.
Galley will be open Friday and Saturday nights until the end of daylight saving and booking is always advisable.

THE DEMAND for berthing at the marina remains very strong with the current waiting list of boats seeking to get on the marina standing at 42.
Turnover of boats at the marina remains very low and as a result waiting times are blowing out.
The initial release of marina berths offered for sale was fully subscribed and, of the current release, only 9 berths remain available.
As a result, in most berth sizes from 10m to 20m, there is only one berth left so, if you are interested in securing your own berth at the marina, please contact Stephen Smith or Darren Vaux at the Marina office.
